NEW YORK May 17 (Reuters) - Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers' preliminary May consumer sentiment index rose to 83.7 from the final April figure of 76.4, according to the survey released on Friday.

Economists in a Reuters survey expected a preliminary May sentiment index reading of 78.0.
